Giving Yourself Permission

Sometimes it’s easier for us to support others when they start to go after their lifelong dream or seek a positive life change, than to support ourselves in the same way.

We typically feel guilty for having our own needs and desires, even when those needs and desires are completely natural and things we deserve. And because of this guilt, we tend to feel the need to ask permission from others to do the things we want.

How to Give Yourself Permission

Too often, we get discouraged from pursuing our dreams or ideas because they sounds too “crazy” or out there, which can be really disheartening. Of course, we could find a few great friends or family members who can offer up an external form of permission to go after all of the things we want in life, but for real internal transformation to happen, we need to hear it from ourselves.

As Jen Sincero says in You Are a Badass: “Don’t let anyone mess with you and your dreams, least of all yourself,” because when you give yourself permission to be unapologetically yourself, you “raise your frequency” in the universe and then your “crazy” ideas won’t seem so impossible.

If you’ve been feeling guilt, shame, or fear around your needs or desires to live a fulfilled and authentic life, try this exercise to help you:

Get out a small notepad or set of sticky notes and actually write down permission slips for yourself on paper and keep them with you as daily reminders . . . that yes, you do have permission to seek all these amazing things.

Try using these templates to get you started:

I give myself permission to ___________.

I am worthy of __________.

I love myself enough to ____________.

Here are some examples of how they may look once you’re finished:

I give myself permission to heal.

I am worthy of healing.

I love myself enough to allow for my own healing.

I give myself permission to have abundance in every area of my life.

I am worthy of abundance in every area of my life.

I love myself enough to allow abundance to flow into every area of my life.

I give myself permission to be happy.

I am worthy of happiness.

I love myself enough to do what makes me happy.

Permission as Affirmation

One of the most impactful ways you can begin to transform your life into one you feel so good about living is to repeat daily affirmations. Once you’ve created your permission slips, you might also want to try taking 5-10 minutes each morning or several times a day to read them aloud to yourself as affirmations — repeating each one as many times as possible. The more you say them, the more powerful they become.

When you set the intention to live with this mindset and practice it over time, you can find the confidence and assurance that you deserve to have these needs and desires brought to reality. Try repeating your permission slips multiple times when you wake up, at least once during the middle of the day, and right before you go to bed as a good place to start.
