The Energy of Words

We recently touched on the importance of listening to others around you as well as to yourself, so today we wanted to talk about the power of words. Listening intently can give us a better understanding of the world around us, but speaking with intention allows us to genuinely inspire, guide, and connect with others.

How Words Impact the World

Scott Momaday once said, “If you believe in the power of words, you can bring about physical changes in the universe.”

Or listen to Pearl Strachan Hurd: “Handle them carefully, for words have more power than atom bombs.”

And Masaru Emoto, the author of Hidden Messages in Water, believed he was able to detect differences in the shapes of water crystals impacted by positive and negative words. He generated tests and described how positive phrases like “Let’s do it!” created attractive, well-formed crystals, but that water exposed to negative expressions like “Do it!” barely formed any crystals at all.

All the things we say and the tone we use to say them have either a negative or positive charge, which means the energy of our words can either do harm or do good in the world. For example, when we’re angry and yelling about something at home, it isn’t just our spouse or our kids who notice: your pets do, too. And when we’re frustrated at work, our emotions can get the best of us and in turn can lead us to say negative things to customers and coworkers.

Manifesting Our Realities

This energy isn’t just something that affects our external relationships, either. The Universe is a powerful force of energy, giving us the ability to build a life we hate or create a life we love.

Some people think that bad things just seem to happen to them all the time (as if the Universe is “out to get them”) or that the success of others is just “luck” given to a small group of people in the world at random.

But if we can all start to see how the words we use can actually manifest in real-life events, the opportunities are endless. That is the true secret of most successful people in the world: achieving your dreams starts with the thoughts and words you say. The best athletes or business owners or innovators are the ones who believe less in the occasional doubts and fears and more in their commitments, talents, and vision for a better life.

A Few Tips + Exercises

The way we talk to others and to ourselves can often be a little too habitual, and the habit can be hard to break if you’re always used to speaking negatively about everything. Here are a few ways to stop the cycle and improve the things you say:

  1. Talk with a smile. It becomes a lot harder to speak negatively when you smile. Whether you’re talking on the phone or you’re looking at yourself in the mirror, practice smiling often — even if it feels forced at first — until smiling becomes something you do almost all the time.

  1. View situations from more than one angle. We tend to feel more upset or hurt when we think from the perspective of one little box. If someone else did or said something negatively towards you, try forgiving them even if they don’t apologize: we never know what someone else is going through. Or if something happened that feels like bad luck, try to view the situation in a new light to see what you might learn from it or how it’s making you stronger.

  1. Give credit where it’s due. If you always feel like you’re talking down about yourself (either in your head or to other people), try reframing these thoughts to give yourself more credit. Think about the hard work you’re doing, even if it hasn’t paid off yet. Acknowledge that you’re doing your best. And thank yourself for trying and be grateful to yourself for making progress!
