16 Aug Ways to Build Your Confidence & Self-Esteem
Have you been feeling emotionally “stuck” lately and you aren’t sure why? Are you constantly admiring others around you who seem to be achieving everything they want in life, while you look down on your own life in comparison?
If so, it sounds like it might be time for a big confidence boost — and that’s okay!
We all experience these negative thoughts and feelings about ourselves from time to time. What’s important, though, is that we take the time to pick ourselves back up and learn practical steps to re-look at ourselves in a new, more positive light. If building your confidence and self-esteem is challenging for you, try some (or all!) of these suggestions below:
Envision the Life You Want
…And not the life others have. Instead of participating in a self-pity party and looking at how your life isn’t as “great” someone else’s, focus your attention on what you do want your own life to look and feel like.
Spend some time to do a few deep reflections on the life of your dreams, without any negative comparisons to others around you. Envision it from top to bottom: everything from where you want to live and your daily lifestyle, to the job or business you want to have, and the community of people you want to surround yourself with.
Get a real clear picture on this life you dream of and write it down in detail. Whenever you start to get down on yourself, read through it and remind yourself that you will achieve it. Remember that what you write down can be changed, updated, and modified at any time — it’s a living document! Revisit it often and keep the life of your dreams your sole focus.
Set Small Goals
Sometimes we set ourselves up for emotional distraught when we focus too heavily on those big five or ten year goals that seem so far away. This can lead us to feel like we aren’t achieving anything right now.
Instead, try looking at those big ambitions in a way that allows you to break them down into smaller, more achievable chunks. What steps will you need to take to reach that larger goal? Take those steps and turn them into weekly or monthly goals.
Then you can start to feel like you’re not only making progress on the overall objective, but when you complete a task in the present, you can tap into a little confidence magic now instead of later.
Give a Helping Hand
When we help others around us, it can subconsciously give us more self-esteem.
Look for new or unique ways to give back in your life. Maybe that’s a call for volunteering at a local non-profit organization. Maybe that’s supporting a friend during a tough time or in the middle of moving into a new home. Or it could be simple things for strangers, like holding doors open or letting people into your lane in the middle of rush hour.
Whatever that may look like for you, practice being open to a “giving” mentality and notice how differently you feel.
Exercise
Sure, exercising at the gym or going on more hikes can boost your health and tone your muscles. But the actions we take while exercising can actually improve our confidence and self-esteem on a physical level.
During exercise, our bodies release endorphins. These chemicals inside our bodies interact with our brains in some powerful and positive ways that reduce stress and anxiety, improve our sleep, and make us overall happier and more confident.
Practice Gratitude
When we feel grateful for the life we have, we’re less likely to be spending time and energy worrying over what we don’t have. It also opens us up to new pathways of positive energy from the universe.
