Why Your Spiritual and Emotional Health Should Be a Top Priority

Why Your Spiritual and Emotional Health Should Be a Top Priority

Usually when people talk about health, they focus on things like eating nutritious foods and getting daily exercise: the physical side of our well being.

But in reality, there is so much more to our health than meets the eye. Making sure we feel physically well and strong is a great initiative, but it’s just as important that we explore other ways to take care of our whole selves. Here are a few reasons why you should be prioritizing your spiritual and emotional health as part of your self-care routine:

1. Physical health is not just physical.

Sure, hiking, weight training, and other fitness activities are all very helpful in keeping your muscles strong and lungs healthy. However, our bodies are also directly influenced by emotions like grief, anger, and happiness.

No matter what we’re going through (the good and the bad), our bodies are responding to our thoughts and emotions. Our heart rates slow or speed up as we experience different emotions throughout the day, and our muscles can become tense when we’re stressed or anxious.

Hormones, cholesterol, immune systems, inflammation, endorphins, melatonin. So many different things  in the body can be impacted by our spiritual and emotional health, which means that taking care of ourselves involves a whole lot more than what we eat and how “fit” we are.

2. Your health affects others around you.

When we’re coming from a place of fulfillment, confidence, and compassion, everyone around us can sense it, just like they can sense your frustration, complacency, or sadness. It shows up not only in our words (what we say to others and how we say it) but also in our actions.

This can in turn affect your personal relationships with friends and family, as well as your professional connections with coworkers, your boss, or business partners. Some people think that self-care is selfish, but being our most optimal selves benefits everyone — and how can that be a bad thing?

3. The life you dream of will be more achievable.

Whether you’re ready to finally resolve the mystery aches and pains in your body, regain a sense of purpose, or simply get out of feeling “stuck,” focusing on your spiritual and emotional health can help you do just that.
